“My dear tree”, 2025

Installation by Salah Saouli

When I was a little boy and didn’t feel like doing my homework, I once asked my mother : “Where does the wooden chair I’m sitting on come from?”

Because she recognized my question as a diversion, she gave a very brief answer : “From a tree.”

This answer got me thinking and pondering. I couldn’t quite imagine how the chair could come from a tree. Was it something like an act of birth? I tried to imagine trees giving birth to chairs.

Later, I learned that the trees are slaughtered so we can get the wood. After that, I had a love-hate relationship with my chair, my table, even my wooden toys…

This work connects to my childhood ideas. We make so much from the raw material wood, but too rarely think about the sacrifice this represents for the trees that have to “give birth” to this wood.

The installation “My Dear Tree” represents a letter to the tree, including an apology for having to use wood to draw attention to the trees and to the natural sources.
