Salah Saouli, “The Collection of Y. Hayek: Series 1, works by Salah Saouli,” Agial Art Gallery, April 8-22
This miniature retrospective showcased fragments and photographs of 13 installations completed over the past 25 years by Berlin-based artist Salah Saouli. On loan from a private collection, the works addressed the fragmented nature of postwar societies in a variety of inventive ways. Due to the gallery’s diminutive size, the works were displayed either in part, in dramatically reduced sizes or via photos of the original installation, leaving viewers with a frustrated yearning to experience the full power of Saouli’s work.
The show nevertheless served as a fitting tribute to an artist whose work has been largely overlooked by local institutions but who is well worth keeping an eye out for in future.
