Inizia la sua carriera accademica in Egitto, dove scrive una monumentale «Histoire de l’Église copte», opera in sette volumi, di cui tre rimangono inediti. Nel 1960 si stabilisce in Libano, collaborando per 37 anni con l’Orient Institut di Beirut…

Buongiorno a tutti!! Da quando c’é stato il regalo al Papa, siamo di nuovo catapultati sui media qui negli Stati Uniti, lettere che richiedono il libro, senza dimenticare le varie richieste a destra e a sinistra…
Samira ci ha inviato un bellissimo articolo di una scrittrice amica di papà e di Samira, articolo conciso e ben scritto, che cattura l’essenza del libro.
Probabilmente non potrei scrivere meglio e te lo mando sia in inglese che in arabo.
La sola cosa che vorrei aggiungere é che sia mia sorella che io e le mie figlie e i miei nipoti abbiamo lavorato sulla traduzione del libro in inglese dal francese.
Era nel 2004. Un’estate carica di cultura per le mie ragazze ed io sedute sul balcone di papà a Beirut.
Per cui siam tutte molto emozionati per averci “messo lo zampino” pure noi.

كانت هدية رئيس مجلس النواب نبيه بري لقداسة البابا لاوون الرابع عشر، خلال لقائهما في قصر بعبدا، تحمل أبعاداً أعمق من مجرد إهداء كتاب. فكتاب “على خطى يسوع المسيح في لبنان” للمؤلف الإيطالي مارتينيانو بيلغرينو رونكاليا، هو في الحقيقة شهادة علمية أكاديمية تؤكد على موقع لبنان الأبدي في الجغرافيا الروحية والتاريخ المسيحي.
وهنا تكمن قوة الهدية ومصداقية محتواها، التي أنا شخصياً أشهد عليها.
قوة الارتباط ومصداقية البحث
إن الكتاب الذي يتناول حضور المسيح ومعجزاته الأولى في جنوب لبنان، وتحديداً في قانا وصور وصيدا، ليس مجرد سرد ديني. هو نتاج جهد مؤرخ إيطالي عظيم، يعرف لبنان ويحبه بعمق يفوق الولاء الوطني.
أنا أعرف البروفسور رونكاليا عن قرب واعرف زوجته اللبنانية الاستاذة سميرة رونكاليا . كان هذا المؤرخ والمفكر شخصية استثنائية، لم يكتفِ بالبحث في المخطوطات، بل عاش في لبنان، تزوج من لبنانية، وأسس حياته هنا، ليقرر في النهاية أن تكون أرض لبنان مثواه الأخير، حيث دُفن في لبنان وقد حضرت أنا جنازته في الفنار . هذا الارتباط الوجداني والجغرافي هو أول دليل على صدق رسالته.
شهادتي: قانا الجليل… الحقيقة اللبنانية الموثقة
الرؤية المحورية التي يقدمها رونكاليا في كتابه، وتؤكدها الدراسة العلمية الأكاديمية، هي أن “قانا الجليل” التي شهدت أعجوبة تحويل الماء إلى خمر هي قانا الجنوبية اللبنانية. وهي دراسة لا تستند إلى العاطفة، بل إلى تحليل دقيق للمسارات الجغرافية والمصادر التاريخية والدينية.
ولأنني كنت شاهداً حياً على هذا العمل، أستطيع تأكيد مدى مصداقيته: “لقد زرنا سوياً، أنا والمؤرخ مارتينيانو رونكاليا والشاعر هنري زغيب والدكتورة ليلى شمس الدين وفريق التصوير لفيلم وثائقي ، إلى موقع قانا الجليل في الجنوب اللبناني. كان البروفسور رونكاليا مؤمناً بشكل مطلق بالمعطيات الجغرافية والتاريخية التي تؤكد تاريخية قانا اللبنانية كمسرح لقصة الأواني الست التي تحول فيها الماء إلى خمر يوم العرس. وقد عملنا على إنجاز فيلم توثيقي يؤكد هذه الحقيقة العلمية والأكاديمية، ليضع حداً لأي جدل حول الموقع الحقيقي لأولى معجزات المسيح.”وقدم الكتاب هدية للرئيس بري.
رسالة الهدية
إن هدية الرئيس بري، باختياره لهذا الكتاب بالذات، هي رسالة واضحة لكل من يعتقد أن دور لبنان في الجغرافيا المقدسة هامشي. هي تؤكد، استناداً إلى بحث مؤرخ محايد وعالمي كان قد قدم ندوات عن كتابه وحضرتها أنا في الجامعة الأمريكية اللبنانية قبل وفاته ، أن لبنان كان ولا يزال “أرضاً مقدسة” وجزءاً أصيلاً من جغرافيا المسيحية الروحية.
الكتاب هو أكثر من هدية بروتوكولية؛ إنه تأكيد لبناني على التاريخ، ممزوج بشهادة مؤرخ إيطالي عشق هذه الأرض حتى النخاع، وكرّس حياته لتأكيد هذه الحقيقة العلمية التي عايشناها ووثقناها ميدانياً. وهي المصداقية التي تجعل لهذه الهدية وزناً حقيقياً على الميزان التاريخي.
When a Gift Becomes a Historical Testimony and a Historian’s Credibility

The gift presented by Speaker Nabih Berri to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV during their meeting at Baabda Palace carried a meaning far deeper than a simple offering of a book. The work “In the Footsteps of Jesus Christ in Lebanon” by the Italian author Martiniano Pellegrino Roncaglia is in fact an academic and scientific testimony affirming Lebanon’s eternal place within the spiritual geography and Christian history.
This is where the strength of the gift lies—along with the credibility of its content, for which I can personally vouch.
The strength of the connection and the credibility of the research
The book, which discusses the presence of Christ and His first miracles in South Lebanon, specifically in Cana, Tyre and Sidon, is not merely a religious narrative. It is the result of the work of a remarkable Italian historian who knew Lebanon and loved it with a depth that surpassed even national attachment.
I personally knew Professor Roncaglia and his Lebanese wife, Ms. Samira Roncaglia. This exceptional historian and thinker did not limit himself to studying manuscripts. He lived in Lebanon, married a Lebanese woman, built his life here, and ultimately chose Lebanon as his final resting place. He was buried in Lebanon, and I attended his funeral in Fanar. This emotional and geographical rootedness is the first evidence of the sincerity of his mission.
My testimony: Cana of Galilee… the documented Lebanese truth
The central idea presented by Roncaglia—and supported by academic research—is that “Cana of Galilee,” where the miracle of turning water into wine took place, is in fact the Cana of southern Lebanon. This conclusion is based not on sentiment, but on careful analysis of geographic pathways and historical and religious sources.
And because I was a firsthand witness to this work, I can attest to its accuracy:
“We visited together—historian Martiniano Roncaglia, poet Henry Zoghaib, Dr. Leila Chamseddine, a documentary film crew, and myself—the site of Cana of Galilee in South Lebanon. Roncaglia was deeply convinced by the geographic and historical evidence proving that Cana, the location of the miracle of the six jars, is indeed Lebanese. We worked on producing a documentary film to confirm this scientific and academic truth, in order to end any debate regarding the true site of Christ’s first miracle.”
The book was later presented as a gift to Speaker Berri.
The message behind the gift
By choosing this specific book, Speaker Berri sends a clear message to those who believe Lebanon’s role in the sacred geography is marginal. He affirms—based on the research of an impartial and internationally respected historian, who delivered lectures on his book (lectures that I attended at the Lebanese American University before his death)—that Lebanon has always been and still is a “Holy Land,” an integral part of Christianity’s spiritual geography.
This book is more than a protocol gift; it is a historical affirmation, carried by the testimony of an Italian historian who loved Lebanon to the core and devoted his life to documenting this scientific truth that we witnessed and confirmed in the field.
It is this credibility that gives the gift its true weight on the scale of history.

L’attuale capolavoro meticoloso e riccamente dettagliato “Nelle orme di Gesù, il Messia, in Fenicia/Libano” rappresenta, per la prima volta, il culmine di una ricerca seria e lunga per sottolineare le difficoltà che tradizionalmente affrontiamo, mentre cerchiamo la fine alle cosiddette discussioni che cantano sempre la stessa tradizionale Terra Santa Palestina o Israele!
Ma Gesù in Fenicia/Libano? Non ne ho mai sentito parlare!
Dott. M.P. Roncaglia, che ha studiato a Gerusalemme, ha visitato e frequentato lo Studium Biblicum Franciscanum e ha intervistato molti studiosi, è riuscito a convincerci che anche il Libano è una vera Terra Santa, secondo l’espressione erudita e autorevole di Papa Giovanni Paolo II… Un esempio sorprendente è il caso di Tiro, la famosa e prospera città fenicia. Tiro aveva una zecca autonoma e aveva l’autorità di coniare monete d’argento che predavano la presenza di Roma, la potenza di occupazione dell’epoca.
Per motivi religiosi, era simbolicamente inappropriato usare le monete romane nel Tempio di Gerusalemme e, in particolare, pagare il sacrificio liturgico. Solo le famose monete d’argento di Tiro furono accettate. Secondo questa legislazione, Gesù, da bambino, fu portato al Tempio da Sua Madre, la Vergine Maria, dove la sua elemosina in conio di Tiro. Le monete di Tiro avevano una maggiore finezza d’argento rispetto a quelle di altre zecche (80%) e un peso stabile grazie a un attento controllo standard (assicurato dall’autorità tiroiana). È un dato di fatto, le autorità del Tempio accolsero il benvenuto allo shekel di Tiro che portava la testa del Dio Melkart sul dritto e l’Aquila di Tiro sul retro, il famoso “Tiro il santo e inviolabile”…
