I was in the Salesian School from Grade 7 to 10 and was able to locate my Photograph as well as that of some of my classmates. I think I returned back to India after completing my GCE O Levels in 1974.
This is just great ! Hats off to the People who have collected these Photos and put them on the Site…..certainly brigs back old memories with nostalgia.
Hi everyone,
Happy to see our School is remembered. I have fond memories of my working days as a teacher and coordinator of studies.
Best wishes to all from Australia.

Greetings, My name is Vicky Haluska. Just today, after receiving mail from the Salesian Missions, I was taken aback to a warm autumn day in Beirut, c. 1974, and quickly found this site via google.
My friend Julia, who knew I had a background in art and was looking for a supplementary income, passed by to tell me the art teacher at Salesian School had suddenly quit and there might be an opportunity for temporary employment.
I put on my only (plaid wool) skirt and riding boots from the souk of used clothing in the Bourg, and went straight away to meet the principal whose name I no longer remember.
Without a portfolio, or credentials, I was somehow hired as the replacement art teacher on the spot. From October or November through the Spring of 1975 I had the lovely pleasure of walking from my apartment in Manara to the school, which was by then
co-ed (but where was it?). During those months, especially in the Spring, school was often closed, for days, due to bombings in Beirut.
The memories of those few intense months are faint but I remember the students were an awesome group. Those I best remember were more or less junior high school age, and delightfully agreeable. There was an upcoming open house of the school and we were called on to decorate the hall with “art”. Together the group decided to make a relevant statement, a mural of Yasser Arafat riding into Jerusalem on a donkey with an olive branch…. or something similar. They worked cooperatively and hard. It was a fine moment to see these sensitive young adults excited to bring their political ideals to Art.
Collaborative drawings were made and eventually some of them mounted on the hall walls to get an idea of how the work might be viewed. Upon seeing what we put up, the principal, a handsome man with greying hair about the age of 50, was horrified by the concept and absolutely forbade us to continue with it. He did not wish his school to reflect what the students felt. After that I forget the rest of my time at Salesian School.
I loved these students!
Anyone out there who remembers Salesian School c. 1974-75, please fill in the details.
with loving kindness,
Vicky Haluska, New York City

Hello,
My name is Christopher Ritchie and I was in the Anglo American section of the Salesian Boys’ School from Grade 1 (1968/1969) until Grade 7 (1974/1975) and someone just directed me to this site, including the class photo of Grade 4 (1971/1972).
Just wanted to say excellent! We left all our school Year Books behind when we left in late 1975 and by the time we returned to Lebanon in 1977 had lost them so it was great fun looking at these!
In this photo of the Grade 4 class, I am in the front row, second from the rightside. Sitting on my right was a great guy called Tarek (who was from Egypt). In the back row, 5th from the left, is Boon Han Sin (he was from Singapore); two to his left, a fella I think called Ajay. The teacher Rubina Tashjion – I think the highest mark she ever gave me was a D or an F!
Excellent stuff – if anyone has the Year Books for 1968/69 through to 1974/1975, I hope we see them all posted up with the class photos!
Kind regards, Chris Ritchie New Zealand
